Etymology
This is a bold headland of the forest ridge and it is tempting to take it as meaning 'steep ridge.' brant, 'steep,' with a Scottish form brent , is a NCy word, but Professor Ekwall notes that the hill-name Brent (D, So) must be a derivative of OE brant , 'steep,' only on record in, poetry. There may have been later confusion with ME brente, 'burned,' common in woodland areas. See further Ritter 98.
