Barrowgreen Ho

Early-attested site in the Parish of Oxted

Historical Forms

  • Le Barwe 14th SACix
  • Berowe in Okested 1375 Pat

Etymology

Barrowgreen Ho is Le Barwe 14th SAC ix, Berowe in Okested 1375 Pat, The Bergh 1391, Berewe 1475, Barogrene 1568, Barowe Grene 1576 SAC vi. v. beorg . Close by is a small isolated hill, which is called The Mount and marked as a tumulus on the 6″ map. According to the VCH (iii, 395) it is a fortified mount and not a tumulus. beorg should therefore be interpreted as 'hill' rather than 'barrow.'
