Etymology

This is a difficult name about which no certainty is possible.Professor Ekwall suggests that the first element may be an ett-derivative (cf. infra 281) of OE  sla, 'sloe,' slāhett having developed to slat and the compound slateswic having developed to slaswic . Possibly, therefore, 'dwelling of (or by) the sloe- thicket.'
