Etymology

Manton is Mennetune 1086 DB, Manton (e )t. Hy 1 (1316) Dugd vi, t. Hy 2 DukRec, Ch, 1312Ass (p), 1327SR (p), 1340Ass , 1380 Dugd iv, 1383 IpmR, Mantone 1316 Dugd vi, Mauneton 1316 Ch. Probably 'Manna 's farm,' v. tun . Ekwall's suggestion (DEPN) 'common tun' (from OE  (ge)mæne, 'common') is, from the historical point of view, most unlikely.
