Etymology

Coust Corner , Coust Lane 1769DROMap , probably to be identified with grangia tenementi sui super montem apud Couschete 1399Ilch , and the surnames of Richard Chussete 1288Ass (associated with Philleyholme supra ), Henry de Cochesete , Thomas de Cochesete 1327, Henry Couch 'sete , Thomas Couch 'sete 1332 (taxpayers in Philleyholme), Henry Chochesete 1340 NI. The second el. is probably (ge)set in the sense 'a place for animals, a fold', or 'a seat, a dwelling', the first may be the ME  surname Co (u )ch , cf. in particular Nicholas Couch '1332 SR (a taxpayer in Abbotsbury, like Philleyholme in Uggescombe hundred) but also occurring in several other pars. in 1327, 1332 SR, v. Reaney- Wilson s.n. Couch .
