Etymology

Olding Hill, Odeling 1227 Ch, Odelinche 14thBodl , Odelynche 1392–3DL , Oldings Hill 1830 OS, Old Linch Meadow and Old Linch Field 1848TA , with a second el. hlinc 'bank'; the name is given on the 6″ to a stretch of minor road climbing up the side of the ridge along which the Roman road called Ermine Street runs. The first el. may be ād 'beacon', a rather rare p.n. el. which occurs in Noads Copse in the adjacent parish of East Garston, v. 332. If a beacon is referred to, it was possibly on the highest point between these two p.ns., W. of Poughley. Prof Löfvenberg points out that the first el. of Olding may be the pers.n. Oda , as in Odstock W 223, Odney Pt 181.
