Harpwood

Early-attested site in the Parish of Lambourn

Historical Forms

  • Le Harpe 1392–3 DL
  • Harp 1848 TA

Etymology

Harpwood, Le Harpe 1392–3DL , Harp 1848TA , v. hearpe , which probably alludes to the shape of a piece of ground, as frequently in Gl (v. Gl 4, 137–8). The field west of the building called Harpwood is shown on the 6″ as having a border of woodland on two sides which make a right-angle, and this may preserve part of the outline of an earlier triangular plot.
