Probably 'village by the beech-tree', from OE  bōc and hāmtūn . The same name occurs in Ha, and the Ha example (ex. inf. Mr J. E. B. Gover) also has early spellings in Bac -, Bak -. Bockhampton in Do may be the Buchæmatun of KCD 708, in which case it has a different etymology, but there is no need to assume, as in DEPN, that the Berks and Ha names are identical with the Do one.
