Etymology

Hapstead is Hapset 1560 ParReg. Miss Holgate suggests that this name may have arisen through the holding of Robert de Hemsted , assessor for Lindfield and Burley in 1332 (SR). He held a virgate of land from Wm atte Stone , which may be the 'stone' of Stoneland infra 272 in West Hoathly or Stone in Framfield, the headquarters of the Hempstead family. The name in that case is manorial in origin.
