Etymology
Wigger Dale (6″), Wiggewalledale , Wyggewalledale 1226LichChart , Ed 1BelCh , Wiggewaledale 1226 ib, Wyggeswelledale 1243 RegLich, Wigewelledale 1282BelCh , Wygwalldale Ed 3 ib. This is probably 'Wicga's stream', v. wælla , but the first el. may well be OE wigga 'beetle' in that sense or the older one of 'that which moves' (v. wigga ). The el. dæl 1 was affixed later. A small stream flows through the valley to the R. Wye.
