Etymology
Lumford Mill (6″), Lompforde Hy 3, Ed 1BelCh , Lumforde c. 1290 ib, Loumfort c. 1310 ib. 'Ford in a woody valley', v. lum(m), ford , the first element being apparently dial. lum which enters into several names in the county and which is also evidenced from La and WRY.Its meaning is 'woody valley, deep pool in a river'. Pegge (42) notes the use of the word in Db as 'a small wood or grove'.
