Etymology

Higgenholes (6″), Hegynholles , Hyggyn hollys c. 1541StarChamb , Higgenholles c. 1543 ib, Hyggen Holes 1549BelCh , Higgen Hooles 1550 ib, Higgen Holes 1565 ib. 'Higgin's hollows' or the like, v. hol 1 ; the first element is the pers.n. Higgin formed from Hickin , a diminutive of Hick , itself a pet-form of Richard . Cf. Higginbottom Ch, now said to be lost, which itself gave rise to the Ch, La surname Higginbottom .
