Historical Forms

  • Erleshey in Foresta de Holt 1468 MinAcct

Etymology

, possibly to be associated with Erleshey in Foresta de Holt 1468MinAcct , ' the earl's enclosure ' , v. eorl , (ge)hæg , which may be named from the Earl of Leicester to whom the forest was granted in 1267 Ch , cf. Earl 's Mead 172 ; however the form Yarlings 1811 OS ( v. Holt Lodge Fm infra ) probably belongs here , in which case the name may be identical with Yarlands 1205 , Yearlings 1293 , etc which possibly mean ' strips used for ploughing ' from ere- and land .
