Uddens Ho (SU 046028), (Æt ) Uddingc (rubric), (æt ) udding 956 (14) Harl (S 609), Udding 1297 Banco, 1797 Boswell, Uddyng 1313 Banco, 1323 Pat, 1331 Cl, Misc, c.1333HarlCh , 1342 Pat, 1501 Ipm, Uddynge 1331 Misc, Oddyng c.1333HarlCh , Vddyng (e )s 1583Glyn , Uddinges 1598DLComm , Uddings 1648 SC, c.1669 Hutch3, cf. Idingewood 1541Glyn , Ydyngwod ' lease 1583ib , probably 'Udd(a)'s place', from an OE  pers.n. Udd (a ) and -ing 2 , v. wudu , lǣs ; the strong form of the pers.n. occurs once but is doubtful (Redin 37), the weak form is found in Uddanhom 843 BCS 442 (now Odiam in Smarden K 407), cf. also Udding wic 869 BCS 524 (unlocated), v. Ekwall, PN -ing 195. For the possible significance of the late manorial genitive forms in -s , cf. Dodding's Fm 1274. The bounds of the AS estate of one hide at Udding (c ) (þæs hywisces land gemære æt udding , v. hīwisc ) are given in 956 (14) Harl (S 609). Dr Gelling suggests that Uddens may originally have been a stream-name referring to Uddens Water.
