Etymology

Bothenwood (Fm) (SU 021025), Bothenewode 1323 Ass (Drew), 1349, 1355Wim , Bothenwode 1462 FF, 1472Weld 1, Bothenwood 1552 WimCW, Bothen Woode 1591DLMB , Bethenwode (probably for Bothenwode ) 1468MinAcct , The famose wood of Bathan , now communely caullid of sum Bothom 1535–43 Leland, Bothenwood , Bathenwood now corruptly Bonwood 1774 Hutch1, cf. Botherwoods 1847TA , v. wudu . Professor Löfvenberg suggests that the first el. is probably OE  boðen 'rosemary, darnel; thyme', whence ME  bothen and dial. botham , bothen 'corn marigold' in Do and Ha (EDD, cf. botherum , botherem in Barnes 50). The former extent of the wood may be suggested by the context of the 1349 form: croftain villa de Wodekesworthe in Bothenewode , v. Wilksworth in Colehill par. supra . In view of the reduced form Bonwood cited by Hutch1, the spellings Bornewood Copice 1547DLMB , Bone Woode 1591ib , Bonward Fd 1847TA may also belong here.
