Other OS name in the Parish of Cann
Etymology
( 1931 6″ , 1902 6″ ) , cf. Boyn Md 1799Map , Boyne Head 1840TA ; if the stream , a feeder of R . Stirchel , flowing in the valley called Boyne Hollow was called Boyne ( NB also Boyne Head ) , this is perhaps a transferred commemorative name from the Irish river which gave name to the battle of the Boyne , 1690 ; however a somewhat similar cluster of Boyn ( e ) - names predating this battle ( Boynhyll 1534 ) and therefore of different ( though unexplained ) origin , occurs in PN Brk 56 ; the first el . of both sets of names may of course be the OE pers.n. Boia ( gen . sg . - n ) .
