Historical Forms

  • Castle-rocks 1784 West

Etymology

( 6 ″ ) is Castle-rocks 1784 West . This is probably so named from its appearance , and is the fairy castle of Scott 's Bridal of Triermain . Mr W . G . Collingwood (CW xvi) assets that the name is not due merely to the appearance of the rock . He describes the ruin of a small building actually on the rock which may have been a ' borg ' or castle before Norman times , and have been the reason why the word ' castle ' eventually came to be an element in the name of the place .
