Etymology

Cf. Armbothewhate 1599 PR (Crosth) in this area.

The second element in this name seems to be the Old Danish bōþ, 'booth.' The first element is uncertain. It may be the ME  armite , ermite , 'hermit,' but an ON  personal name Armi , short for ON  Arnmóðr , is also possible.
