Etymology

Foghamshire (street-name) is Fokene juxta Chyppeham 1289Ass , Fokene 13th RegMalm, Fokenestret 1370Cor , Foggramshire , Foggamshyre 1514Ct , Foggamshier 1564Add , Foggamshere 1587FF . This district of Chippenham clearly takes its name from the tributary of the Avon which is called in 1232 in the Lacock Cartulary (14th) aqua que vocatur Fokena , aqua que vocatur Focane , and with regard to which we also have the phrase ultra Fokene .
