Etymology

In PN D (654)s. n. Tytherleigh it was noted that in that name and also in Tytherley (Ha) the first element was, as suggested by Professor Ekwall, the OE  adj. tīedre , 'fragile, weak,' and it was suggested that the same adj., used as a personal name of the nickname type, might lie behind Tytherton in Wiltshire. Since then Ekwall (DEPN s. n. Tytherington in Cheshire) has suggested that we may have this personal name not only in the Cheshire place-name but also in Tytherington (Gl), Tytherington infra 168, and the present place. Cf. also Tytherington in Marston Bigot (So), Tyderington 1242 Ass, Tudryngton 1425 FF. The interpretation would in all these names alike be 'Tīedre 's farm,' v. ingtun . Adam Lucas had a holding here in 1249 (WIpm.)
