Etymology

Borwains (lost), Borghanmor 1295Lowth , le Burghanes a. 1296 ib, Borwaynes 1488 ib, v. burgæsn 'cairn'. Several ancient sites exist in the parish, to which the name could refer, cairns and tumuli at grid 83–489162, 470130, 532194, standing stones at 490163, a stone circle at 529193, and encampments at 469127, 530193, besides a stone circle at Tow Top and tumulus at Low Raise (infra ).
