Probably 'rich, fertile hill', from e.ModE (NCy) battel used adjectivally of 'nutritious, fattening pasture' (cf. NED s.v. battle adj.), v. beorg . ME  bataille 'battle, dispute' is also possible, but the allusion is lost.
