, Douglass -Ing 1777 NB 339 , v. eng ' meadow ' , from the Scots  pers.n. Douglas , the surname Dowglas occurring in Brough in 1377SR ; NB suggests ( without other evidence than the name ) that it was the site of a battle against the Scots under Lord Douglas in 1390 .
