Etymology

'The grove near Hoff', v. lundr , which sometimes denotes 'a sacred grove, one offering sanctuary' in Viking times (cf. EPN ii, 27–8, and Hoff supra ). Some of the spellings may reflect the influence of Welsh  llwyn 'grove'.
