Etymology

'Ford at the mill', v. myln , ford . South Milford was doubtless one of the berewics in the Archbishop's Sherburn estate but is not named; it could, however, have been the site of the mill mentioned in DB. The ford carried the Roman road to Tadcaster across the stream now called Mill Dike. 'South' in relation to North Milford 69infra . The first spelling niy senforda is in a late transcript and stands for mylenforda .
