Etymology

'Seat-shaped (that is, flat) hill', v. set-berg. The compound is found elsewhere in such p.ns. as Sedber 99, 103supra , Sedbury YN 289, Sadberge Du 171. The form with Sat - is due to confusion with ON  sǽtr which appears in English as set and sat . The forms with Sad -, Sed - are due to the assimilation of -t - to -d - before -b -.
