'Garth's valley', from the ON  pers.n. Garðr (gen. Garðs , Gards , Garz ) and dalr . The earliest spelling with Garce - is usual in representing ON  -ðs - by -ce - (cf. EPN ii, 92 s.v. -s 2 ).
