Etymology

Taythes, Tathes 1602, 1613 PR, 1655 WillS, Taithes 1606, 1613 PR, Teaths 1771 M. From ON  taða 'a manured home-field', and more generally in the phrase tǫður ok engjar 'the in-field' in contrast to eng 'the out-field'. It is a derivative of ON  tað 'dung left for manure on the pasture' and it survives as NCy dial tathe , teathe ; cf. also Taythes Lane ii, 68supra .
