Ibsey Pits (lost), Hybsapit '1573 PRLds, (the ) Ipsepit (t )s 1574, 1613 ib, Ipsaypit (t )s 1575 ib, Ipsawpit (t )s 1591 ib, Ipsapit (t )s 1612 Surv, Uebsepetts 1579 PRLds, Ibsey (cole ) pitt (e )s 1589 ib, 1698 LdsManBk. The first el. is possibly an old surname or a p.n. Ibsey , which could be the OE  pers.n. Ibe and ēg in some such sense as 'water-meadow'. v. pytt .These coal-pits were in Knowsthorpe (1612 Surv 431).
