Etymology

The Town, Townend, Leeds Towne 1662, 1672 LdsCt, Leeds upper towne 1677 Thores, the Town (e )-end , y e Town (e )-end 1572, 1586, 1613 PRLds, 1687 Lease, 1822 PRStP, Towns End c. 1725, 1771 M. v. tūn (for this use cf. Mickletown ii, 127supra ), ende . The Town included Kirkgate (LdsCt 2) and Townend was near the Headrow (1817 M); it was one of the three districts of Leeds (cf. Mainridding 129 supra ).
