Etymology

'New farmstead', v. nīwe , tūn . The affix refers to the local family of Bank (e ), known from 1385Serj 3, 1401 Puds 243, etc., who held the manor for more than three centuries. They doubtless took their name from the bank at Newton Bank 50supra . v. also cald 'cold' and cf. Coniston Cold 45supra .
