Smither Gill, Smychargill 1577 WillY, Smikergill , Smykergill 1612 PRGr, 1670 PRRl, Smigergill 1623, 1670 PRGr. The first el. could be an ON  smið -karl 'a smith's man'; though this is not on record it would account for the variation between the earlier and modern forms; cf. OIcel  smið -kona 'smith-woman' (a byname). Otherwise it may be OE  smicer 'beautiful, fair' though in ME usage this is used only of persons. v. gil 'ravine'.
