Etymology

The Hull, Hull Gap, Hullgapp (e )1584 WillY, 1632 PRGr, 1698 PRRl, the hulgapp 1602 PRGr, Hulgappe 1628Thn 97. The el. hull occurs several times in the Craven district; it is unlikely to be ME  hull , the WMidl form of hyll 'hill'. In some cases it could be a late dial. form of ON  hóll 'an isolated rounded hill' (which would be appropriate for Hull Gap) and in others OE  hulu 'a shed, hovel' (which is certainly the case in The Hull); the latter is probably the usual source; cf. dial. hull 'a hovel, a place where animals are kept to be fattened, a sty'.
