Etymology

'Erd's mound', v. hlāw . Erd is a pers.n. which represents an OE  Eard or the OE  Eorēd which appears to be the first el. of Ardsley i, 290supra . Here, as in the latter, the spellings in Ardes - are late or from late manuscripts and no doubt represent the normal development of ME  er to ar . The last spelling Adge - has an assimilation of -ds - to [dʒ] (cf. Phonol. § 52). v. Addenda.
