Etymology
Westerton, 1379 PT (p), 1459, 1462 Test ii, 1539 WillY, 1546 YChantet freq to 1614 FF. 'More westerly village', v. westerra , tūn . This was doubtless originally an alternative name for West Ardsley supra which survived only as the name of a township. On this kind of name substitution cf. Mickletown 127supra .
