Parish in the County of West Riding of Yorkshire

Etymology

Many of the old townships in the parishes of Kirkheaton, Kirkburton, Almondbury and Huddersfield, which for the most part occupy the valley of the Colne and the Holme up to the borders of Lancashire, have been re- organised to form the Urban Districts of Kirkburton, Holmfirth, Meltham, and Colne Valley and the County Borough of Huddersfield. Kirkburton Urban District includes the townships of Kirkburton, Shelley, Shepley and part of Thurstonland from this parish as well as the townships of Kirkheaton, Lepton and Upper Whitley from Kirkheaton parish (223supra ).The other townships in Kirkburton parish (Cartworth, Fulstone, Hepworth, part of Thurstonland, Scholes and Wooldale) are now in Holmfirth Urban District (289infra ).
