Etymology

Fitton Hall is Fittonehall 1366ElyCh and was the home of Alanus de Fittun (c. 1213 Fees). Cf. terram Alani de Fittune c. 1254Thorney .Here at an earlier date may have lived Ellich de Fitton (t. Hy 2 (1314) Ch). The first element is ON  fit , 'meadow-land by a river,' cf. “sea banckes…for the defendinge of the landes, marshes, holms, ffittyes ” (1617Depositions ). Hence 'tūnby the meadow-land.'
