Ivesdike Field

Early-attested site in the Parish of Leverington

Etymology

Ivesdike Field (6″). Cf. Eyisdich 1331Ct , Evysdeke , Ewsdeke 1543 ib., Evisdikebrigge , Eydikesbrigge , Evil dike brigg (sic)1570 Imb, Isedike bridg 1611SewersD , Ivesdike bridge 1620 ib., Eyes Dyke 1768Wisb , Ivesdyke Field 1806 ib. There has clearly been confusion in the later forms of this name. The first element is possibly the gen. sg. of ēg , 'marsh-land.' The forms with v are difficult of explanation, but may be due to association with the family of John Ivy and Thomas Ive (1454, 1600), which held land near the dike.
