Etymology

Plain Field (6″) is Flaynefelde 1335Wisb , Flannyffeild 1436SewersC , Sleynffeld (sic)1524 Ely, Flaynfelde t. Hy 8Rental , Plainefeild 1611SewersD , Flanefeilde 1620 ib., Flatmore al. Flain Field , Plain al. Flainfield 1785Wisb , Flain Field c. 1840TA . This name would seem, by a curious chance, to be identical with Plainfield (Nb), earlier Flaynefeld (PN NbDu 157) and the first element would seem to be ON  fleinn , 'pike, arrow.' The Leverington area, surrounded by lanes, does suggest an arrow-head in shape.
