Etymology

As the first form is from an original charter there can be no doubt that the pers. name in this p.n. is Tulla rather than Tylla , hence 'Tulla's farm,' v. ingtun , cf. Tulwick (Berks), Tullewyk in 1284Ass . For the development of u to i , cf. Dinton (PN Bk 159), Diddington (PN BedsHu 254), Diglis (PN Wo 163).The change is probably due to the point-consonants before and after the vowel.
