Etymology

This p.n. is the same as Malling (K), earlier Meallingas .Ekwall, PN in -ing 38, suggests that they derive from a lost pers. name Mealla , cognate with the first element in OHG  Mallobaudes (cf. Schönfeld s. n .). Hence, 'Mealla's people,' v. ing . Cf. also Mawsley (Nth), DB Malesle , 1324 Ipm Mallesle .
