Historical Forms

  • Hendge Lane 1581 FM

Etymology

Henge Lane now Brook Lane infra 355. In 1543 (FM ) we have 'an acre of brook called the Henge ' and also Henge Lane , so also Hendge Lane in 1581 (FM ). The lane leads steeply down to the marshes and we have here the same first element as in OE  hengeclif , 'sloping cliff.'
