Etymology

This is a rectangular earthwork such as might be used for the stalling of oxen (Allcroft, Downland Pathways 23). The OE  form of the name must have been oxenaseten , i.e. 'seten of the oxen.' For the interpretation of seten , v. infra 561s. v .
