Etymology

This name has been discussed already s. n. Ripton in PN BedsHu 219, where it is shown that the name is probably descriptive of the ridge on which Ripe stands and that the name is cognate with LGer  riep , 'shore, slope,' East Frisian ripe , 'edge.' A further example of it is found in fealcing rip in a Kentish charter (BCS 813).
