Etymology

This is a very difficult name. The original form may have been OE  Hēahingtun , 'farm of Hēaha ,' (v. ingtun ), this being a short form of one of the OE  pers. names in Hēah -. The name is on record (Redin 50). Cf. Heighington (PN NbDu s. n .).Topographically an OE  Heāhingatun , 'farm of the high dwellers 'is not out of the question but we should have expected some ME  forms in -ingeton . For the k - sound cf. Tickeridge, Hickstead, and Tilkhurst supra 273, 279, 333.
