Etymology

Windfallwood Common [waindfəl] is Wyndefeld , Wingefold 1296 SR, Wyngefold 1331AD C6472(all p), Winfold 1547 Wills, Wingfold 1567 ChancP, 1642Will , Windfold Wood 1780 Parish Records . Beyond its being clear that we have another fold - name here (v. falod ) it is difficult to suggest an etymology for these inconsistent forms. Possibly the first element is the same as that found in Wyndham infra 213.
