Etymology

The second element in this name, as suggested by Middendorff (58), is OE  geselle , found also in Spilshill (K), speldgisella (BCS 343) and hlifgesella (BCS 442), also in Kent. It is a cognate of OE sele and must have been used of a group of buildings of some kind. The first element is boc and the whole name must mean 'buildings by the beechtree.' v. Addenda supra v.
