In DB we have pers. names Ape , Apius and Appe , of obscure origin, possibly alternative hypocoristic forms of Abba with unvoicing of b to p ; such a pers. name may form the first element in this name.A diminutive Ap (p )el seems to be found in Applesham supra 224.
