Etymology

v. hyrst . The Munceus family are first associated with the place about the end of the 12th cent. (v. Farrer, Honours and Knights ' Fees iii, 376). Est or 'east' in distinction from Hurstpierpoint supra 274. The name is spelled Hurstmonceux (1″) and Hurstmonceaux (6″) in Hurstmonceux Place.
