Swale Bank

Early-attested site in the Parish of Glynde

Historical Forms

  • atte Swylle 1332 SR

Etymology

Swale Bank (6″), cf. the Swyll , Swill 1581FM , Swill gate 1652FM . It is to be associated with Ivo atte Swylle (1332 SR). This must be connected with OE  swylle found in swyllan healas , a place on a stream in BCS 1036. It was presumably used of a place where water flowed freely and 'swilled' anything in contact with it. At the foot of Swale Bank, the lowest slopes of Mount Caburn, there are small watercourses linking up with Glynde Reach.
